A tragic accident happened on October 22, 2024, in Snake River Canyon, south of Jackson, Wyoming, near Grand Teton National Park. Grizzly 399, who was known as the “Queen of the Tetons,” was hit and killed by a car. At the time of the event, Grizzly 399 was with her yearling cub. She was a 28-year-old female bear and the oldest known reproducing female in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The cub’s condition is still being watched, and there are no signs that it was involved in the crash.
Grizzly 399 was a popular bear in the wildlife scene, getting a lot of attention from people all over because she was so visible and raised a bunch of cubs that everyone loved to spot in the busy parts of the park. Her passing has really hit home for wildlife lovers and conservation folks, since she was seen as a symbol for grizzly bears and the conservation work happening in the area.
