International Teachers’ Day

According to UNESCO, International Teachers’ Day honors teachers’ organizations around the world. It has been held annually on October 5 since 1994, and more than 100 countries around the world celebrate this day. The purpose of Charter Day is to mobilize community support for global teachers while simultaneously ensuring that the educational needs of future generations continue to be met. Currently, it is estimated that there are about 60 million teachers in the world. But according to the international organization Oxfam, there are currently about 115 million children in the world who do not go to school, and they do not receive the most basic human rights.

Every time they wake up to the dawn of the morning, they do not hope to inherit the minimum benefits that an education can bring. These children may know about AIDS, poverty, disease, and hard work, but subconsciously never know what a teacher means. This organization is trying its best to mobilize governments, companies, and organizations to donate money for the goal of “education for all.” For children in all poor countries to have access to a global education, we need more than 15 million teachers.

Education International (EI) firmly believes that Teachers’ Day should be recognized and celebrated by the international community worldwide. The efforts of EI and its more than 348 member organizations have contributed significantly to this widespread recognition.

Teachers’ Day in Russia

Russia celebrates October 5 as Teachers’ Charter Day. Before 1994, Russians celebrated Teachers’ Day on the first Friday of October with great enthusiasm. Bouquets of flowers, sweets, and meaningful souvenirs were presented to more than 1.5 million Russian teachers.

In China

In 1984, Wang Zishen, former president of Peking University, proposed establishing a commemorative day to honor teachers. China. By February 21, 1985, the country had unanimously chosen September 10 every year as its chartered Teachers’ Day. Today, many Chinese people want to move this holiday to September 28, the birthday of Confucius.

As an Eastern country with a tradition of valuing the morality of “respecting teachers and valuing education,” many generations of Chinese students, as well as grandparents and parents, visit temples and shrines to worship sages who contributed to the establishment of Chinese education and philosophy of life, such as Lao Tzu, Confucius, and Trang Tu.

In America

The National Education Association of the United States has described American Teachers’ Day as a day to honor and recognize the contributions and dedication of those who work in education to the development of people’s lives. The origin of Teachers’ Day in America is unclear. Around 1944, an Arkansas teacher named Mattye Whyte Woodridge began petitioning educational and political leaders about the need for a day to honor teachers. One of the leaders he wrote to was Eleanor Roosevelt. She persuaded Congress to declare Teacher’s Day in 1953.

The National Education Association, along with its members in Kansas and Indiana, lobbied Congress to designate one day a year as National Teacher Day. Congress proclaimed March 7, 1980, as National Teacher Day that year. They then continued to observe the first full week of May each year until 1985, where it remains today.
